A day long celebration was held in Hurleyville on Saturday, July 10, 2004, to honor Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Francis S. Currey, a Sullivan County native and former resident of the hamlet in Fallsburg. The Fallsburg Town Board officially declared the day as Francis S. Currey Day.

Mr. Currey is the only Sullivan County resident to have been awarded the nation's highest award for valor in the 20th century. He is also New York State's only living Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from World War II. A member of the U.S. Army, 30th Infantry Division, Company K, 120th Infantry, Mr. Currey earned the award for his rescue of five fellow soldiers and for waging a courageous "one man war" which stemmed an enemy advance in Malmedy, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge on December 21, 1944.

The day long celebration started with a parade at 1:00 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony during the parade marked the dedication of Francis S. Currey Boulevard. A ceremony immediately after the parade included the unveiling of a monument honoring Mr. Currey that will be installed at the Sullivan County Museum. The event featured exhibits of military equipment and vehicles. The celebration closed with a spectacular fireworks display.
